If you have never been on a shoot before, the whole thing can feel opaque. Here is what a normal day looks like, so you know what to prep for and what to expect.
Before the shoot
We have a call, usually a week or two out, to lock the shot list against the deliverables. I send a call sheet with times, addresses, and a shot-by-shot plan. Your job on your end is short: pick the location, clear the space of anything you do not want on camera, and let anyone on camera know what to wear.
On the day
I arrive 30 to 45 minutes before the first shot to set up. A typical half-day is four hours on site, a full day is eight. Half of that time is shooting; the other half is moving between setups, adjusting lighting, and doing takes. If we are shooting interviews, expect the person on camera to sit for 20 to 30 minutes each, most of which we will cut out.
Between takes
Slow. It always feels slow. Every setup takes 10 to 15 minutes to build even when it looks like nothing is happening. This is normal and it is where the quality comes from.
Wrap and after
