Small business owners ask me almost weekly whether they should invest in video or photography first. It is the wrong question. The right one is what each format does, and how to build a content library that covers both without shooting twice.
What video does better
Motion, emotion, and time-based storytelling. If you need to show a process, a testimonial, or the energy of a place, video wins every time. Video also gets the algorithm lift on almost every platform in 2026, from Reels to TikTok to LinkedIn.
What photo does better
Speed to publish, editorial flexibility, and cost per asset. A single shoot day can generate 60 to 100 usable stills for your website, print, decks, and social. Photos also last longer as evergreen content, where video tends to peak in the first week.
The move
Shoot both on the same day. A photographer with a video-capable kit can cover both formats in one visit, and the same setups that make great stills usually make great b-roll. You end up with a library instead of a single asset, and the day rate for combined coverage is typically 20 to 30 percent less than two separate days.
The one case for splitting them: high-end campaign work where the shoot is scripted around a single hero deliverable. Otherwise, one day, both formats. Ask about a hybrid day →
